The CWRC is committed to providing safe and suitable release sites for animals ready for release. Many factors are taken into consideration when choosing release sites. Often the best thing is to return the animal to the site where it was found; it may already have a territory in that area, a mate, or an established nest site For various reasons, sometimes an animal can't be released to the location where it was found:
When we can't return an animal to it's original location, we try to choose a suitable area with appropriate habitat for release. We often consult with local biologists, naturalists, and government agencies to try and chose the best site, taking factors such as local animal population, food sources, and suitable habitat into consideration. At this time, the CWRC is looking for landowners who are willing to have animals released on their private property. Most types of habitat are in demand, but of particular interest are old growth forest, meadows, lakes/streams, and isolated areas of wooded property. In many cases we are interested to know what type of animals are already residing in theses area, so we can determine if it would be a good match for a release site. Usually, all that is required is your permission to release an animal on your property, and we may want to do follow-up visits for a few days to see if the animal can be spotted. We always appreciate when a landowner is willing to keep an eye out for the animal and let us know when it is spotted and how it is doing. In some cases we may ask if the landowner is willing to put out supplementary food for a few days (we will supply this food). Habitat loss is one of the main reasons many of our wild animals are in trouble, thank you for offering your property as a safe release site. |
